Students will be able to identify the three types of foundations in a home. In the basement portion, they will know the definition and the steps taken to build a basement. Next, they will examine the signs of water intrusion as well as high levels of humidity in a basement and the problems that it will play in the home. They will also explore the different remedies to fix water issues. Next, the student will examine two types of basement wall failure, and it’s cause along with multiple types of repairs. The student will be able to identify settlement or “vertical movement” along with an understanding of what causes settlement. They will be able to examine two different types of repairs to either permanently stabilize the home or lift it original height. The student will understand what a crawlspace is and the different types of issues, including detailed examples of their problems. They will also cover the remedy for each of the issues that may be found in the crawlspace. Finally, the student will be able to identify poor floor support, what causes the issue along with a solution to fix the problem.
